وُلد في قرية اسمها شبرا بالقرب من الإسكندرية، إلا أنه كان قد هجر منزل أبويه لينعم بسكون الصحراء فترهب بدير الأنبا مقاريوس الكبير باسم الراهب مكاري
وذاع عنه انه راهب شديد التقشف كثير التأمل وقد قربته هذه الصفات إلى قلوب جميع من عرفوه
وحين تنيح البابا قزما الثالث سنة 923 م اتفقت كلمة الجميع على رسامته بطريركًا، ومن ثَمَّ قصد مندوبو الأساقفة والأراخنة إلى دير القديس مقاريوس الكبير وأمسكوه وأخذوه إلى الإسكندرية حيث تمت رسامته سنة 923م (639ش)
زيارات رعوية كان أول عمل قام به هو رحلة رعوية ليفتقد شعبه ويعرف أحوالهم بنفسه، وفي أثناء هذه الرحلة مر بشبرا مسقط رأسه وقصد إلى البيت الذي قضى فيه طفولته، وحدث أن أمه كانت في تلك الساعة جالسة أمام الباب تغزل فحياها وردت هي التحية عليه دون أن ترفع نظرها نحوه
فقال لها: "سلام لك يا أمي، ألا تعرفين من أنا؟ إنني ابنك وقد تركتك لأقضي حياتي في الدير راهبًا متعبدًا، لكن النعمة الإلهية قد منحتني أن أكون خليفة لمار مرقس كاروزنا الحبيب"
وعندها رفعت أمه عينيها إليه فإذا بدموعها تنهمر كالسيل على خديها، فانزعج وسألها: "ماذا بكِ يا أماه؟" أجابته: "إن الكرامة التي نلتها كرامة عظمى حقًا ولكن مسئولياتها غاية في الخطورة
فأنت كنت مسئولاً عن نفسك فحسب حين كنت راهبًا بسيطًا في الدير، أما الآن وقد جلست على كرسي مار مرقس فقد أصبحت مسئولاً عن شعب الكرازة المرقسية
لهذا لا يسعني إلا أن أبكي ضارعة إلى الله تعالى الذي ائتمنك على هذه الوديعة أن يغمرك بنعمة فيمكنك من القيام بمسئولياتك الجسام"
واهتز الأنبا مكاريوس حتى الأعماق لكلمات أمه إذ تجلت أمامه حقيقتها، فقضى حياته يعلم الشعب ويحثه على مداومة قراءة الأسفار الإلهية وتعاليم الآباء
في عهده تولى واليًا جديدًا على مصر هو الأخشيد الذي وصلها في أغسطس سنة 935م (651ش)، وكانت مصر قد بلغت إذ ذاك حالة من الفوضى والارتباك بسبب اشتداد المنافسة بين الأمراء وما تسبب فيه جنودهم من السلب والنهب والقتل دون رحمة ولا تروٍ، فأعاد الأخشيد هدوءها واستقرارها ورخاءها وثبت قواعد النظام خلال الإحدى عشرة سنة التي تولى فيها الأمور
اهتمامه بالتعمير قام البابا خلال فترة الاستقرار التي مرت بها البلاد بزيارة رعوية ثانية، قام فيها أيضًا بزيارة برية شيهيت وقضى فيها بضعة أسابيع، وقد تهلل قلبه إذ وجد عدد الرهبان يتزايد رغم الأحداث والضيقات
ولم يعكر عليه صفوه غير شعوره بما يقاسيه الشيوخ الساكنون في دير الأنبا يحنس كامي من تعب لاضطرارهم إلى الذهاب للصلاة في دير الأنبا يوأنس القصير إذ لم يكن في ديرهم كنيسة، فقرر لساعته أن يبني لهم واحدة في ديرهم وبدأ بالعمل فورًا
وبينما كان العمل جاريًا عاد إلى مقر رياسته ليحتفل بصلوات عيد الغطاس المجيد، وما أن انتهى من الاحتفالات حتى عاد إلى شيهيت ثانية ليكرس كنيسة دير الأنبا يوأنس كامي
لما رأى البابا السكندري السلام منتشرًا في مصر انشغل في بناء عدة كنائس
وقد قضى الأنبا مكاريوس في رعاية الشعب عشرين سنة جاهد خلالها الجهاد الحسن لأنه لم ينس قط كلمات أمه ودموعها التي استقبلته بها في مستهل باباويتهread
