متاؤس الرابع البابا المائة واثنان
كان يدعى الراهب القمص جرجس الميري وكان رئيسًا لدير البراموس، سيم بطريركًا سنة 1660م في أيام السلطان محمد الرابع وفي نفس السنة نقل الكرسي البطريركي من حارة زويلة إلى حارة الروم 1660م في سنة 1669م حدث حريق كبير في أيامه جهة حارة زويلة مات فيه كثيرون وفي سنة 1670 م انتشر وباء عظيم بمصر وضواحيها اضطهاد الأقباط عاني البابا من سوء معاملة الأتراك له إذ كان الوحيد من دون بطاركة الطوائف الأخرى الموضوع تحت مراقبة الأتراك، فكان ممنوعًا من الخروج، كما كان محرمًا عليه الاتصال بالجاليات الأجنبية، وغير مسموح له بالسفر إلى أية جهة، وكانت حياته مهددة في كل لحظة كان الأقباط هم الطائفة الوحيدة من غير المسلمين التي تُعامَل باضطهاد شديد من المسلمين يعاملون للقبط بإهانة أكثر من يهود مصر فكانوا يسيئون إليهم ويغلقون لهم الكنائس ويقفلون عليهم أبواب بيوتهم لأتفه الأسباب ويظلمونهم ظلمًا فاضحًا حتى يرغمونهم بدفع غرامات مالية باهظة وفي سنة 1672م قاسى الأقباط اضطهادًا فظيعًا لأن بعض الجند الأتراك قاموا بذبح امرأة خليعة وألقوا بجثتها قريبًا من بركة الأزبكية، فقام العساكر ظلمًا وعدوانًا بغلق بيوت النصارى المتاخمة لهذه المنطقة وأجبروهم على دفع غرامة قدرها ألف دينار دية لهذا الدم المسفوك إذا أرادوا أن يفتحوا بيوتهم ويذهبوا إلى إعمالهم شفاعة القديس مرقوريوس حدث ذات مرة أن أراد الغوغاء أن يهدموا كنيسة القديس مرقوريوس بمصر القديمة، ولكي يصبغوا على عملهم بصبغة قانونية عينوا من قِبَل الدولة أغا للقيام بتنفيذ هذه المهمة فلما بلغ الخبر للبابا متاؤس اغتم غمًا شديدًا وأقام ليلة ساهرًا متشفعًا وطالبًا مساعدة القديس مرقوريوس، وما كاد الجند يقتربون من الكنيسة حتى وقع عليهم حائط بجوارهم فماتوا جميعًا، وشاع الخبر في المدينة كلها فاضطربوا وعدلوا عن مشورتهم الرديئة أخيرًا تنيح البابا متاؤس سنة 1675م ودفن في
