ترهّب هذا القديس منذ حداثته وقام بعبادات كثيرة، وكان محبًا للانفراد والوحدة وكان يكثر من البكاء في الصلاة طالبًا من اللّه أن ينجيه من مكائد الشيطان
سيامته بطريركًا ولما تنيّح البابا ميخائيل السادس والخمسون بقيت الكنيسة أربع عشرة سنة بدون بطريرك بسبب الكوارث القاسية التي حلّت بها، فأغلقت كثير من الكنائس، وحلّ النزاع بين المسيحيين بسبب سوء الرعاية
سخّر الرب لهم الأنبا باخوم أسقف طحا، وكانت له مكانة سامية لدى الوالي خماروية، فتوسط لديه فسمح بإقامة بطريرك للكنيسة القبطية وأعطاه تصريحًا بذلك
وقع الاختيار على هذا الأب ليكون بطريركًا مكانه فرُسم سنة رغمًا عنه في شهر بشنس عام 625ش الوالي 910م في عهد خلافة المقتدر بن المعتضد
رعايته واهتمامه بخلاص نفسه أخذ يهتم بشؤون الكنيسة ولم تمنعه مهام البطريركية عن عباداته ونسكه إذ كان يقضي أغلب الأيام في البرية، وإذا جدّ ما يستدعي قيامه إلى مصر أو الإسكندرية كان يذهب ثم يعود ثانية إلى البرية
وكان يجاهد ضد الجسد والشيطان بالإكثار من الصوم والصلاة والسهر والتواضع
وكان يستيقظ في الليل ويأخذ مجرفة من حديد ويلبس ثوبًا رثًا ويمرّ على دورات المياه التي بالقلالي فيغسلها وينظفها
وأقام على هذه الحال حتى نظر اللّه إلى تواضعه وانسحاق قلبه فرفع عنه الآلام ومنحه نعمة الانتصار على الخطية والذات
الالتزامات المادية سار على خطة سلفه في فرض ضريبة على كل أسقفٍ يُرسم جديدًا لكي يدفع الرسم المطلوب لكنائس الإسكندرية التي تعهد بها البابا ميخائيل في وقت ضيقه
كما أنه لم يلغِ الضريبة الشخصية التي كانت مفروضة على أعضاء الكنيسة القبطية لتسديد طلبات ابن طولون، بل ظل يتقاضاها حتى يتمكن من ترميم الكنائس المتهدّمة
وأقام هذا الأب عابدًا ومجاهدًا وواعظًا إحدى عشر سنة ثم تنيّح بسلام سنة 911مlink
