زهده وُلد في المحلة الكبرى سنة 1872م وترهب بدير الأنبا بيشوي بوادي النطرون تحت اسم الراهب عبد المسيح سنة 1888م ورُسِم قسًا سنة 1892م
وفي سنة 1895م استدعاه الأنبا كيرلس الخامس ورسمه قمصًا وعينه سكرتيرًا خاصًا له، ثم رُسِم مطرانًا لأسيوط سنة 1897 م باسم الأنبا مكاريوس
قد كان على جانب كبير من الزهد والتقشف، بل لقد بلغ به الزهد حدًا جعله يحتاج في الكثير من الأيام إلى المال الذي يشتري به القوت الضروري لأنه كان يوزع ما يأتيه من التقدمات على إنشاء المدارس والكنائس وعلى الفقراء
وفي سنة 1911م دعا الأنبا مكاريوس إلى عقد مؤتمر قبطي في أسيوط للإصلاح الكنسي، كما قدم للبابا كيرلس الخامس سنة 1920م رسالة عن المطالب الإصلاحية
تم تنصيبه بطريركًا سنة 1944م بعد نياحة البابا يوأنس التاسع عشر
خلاف بين البابا والمجلس الملّي في أيامه حدث خلاف بين البابا والمجلس الملّي اضطر البابا في هجر العاصمة والاعتكاف بحلوان ثم في دير الأنبا بولا، وقد تدخلت الحكومة وطالبت المجلس الملّي بالعمل على عودة البابا، فعاد واستمر النزاع حتى تنيح البابا في 31 أغسطس سنة 1945مuses of viagra
